More than four in five lottery tickets bought in the US between 2004 and 2015 are counterfeit, according to a study published on Tuesday.
The study by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) found that in a total of 431 cases of tickets bought between 2004 to 2015, there was at least one of the following: A forged lottery ticket; an invalid lottery ticket, or an expired ticket; or an invalid ticket that was replaced with a counterfeit ticket.
It found that the majority of the fake lottery tickets were for sale on the Internet.
A small number were sold as genuine lottery tickets.
In most cases, the counterfeit tickets were either counterfeit in origin or in a location with limited availability.
A study published by IEP in January found that of more than 1,400 lottery tickets sold in the United States in 2017, approximately 80 percent were counterfeit.
The IEP study was carried out with the help of the National Association of Realtors, the National Lottery Association, and the State Department’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.
“The lottery industry has always been susceptible to fraud,” said IEP co-author and senior fellow Michael Richey.
“It has been a long time since there has been an event as large and as well-known as the 2020 Super Bowl, so it’s not a surprise that fraud continues to be a problem.”IEP also found that more than half the lottery tickets purchased in the country between 2004-2015 were for “limited quantities” of tickets.
A “limited quantity” is defined as a ticket that is only for a single purchase.
In a separate study, published on Monday, the Consumer Federation of America found that a total total of 843,000 of the 664 million tickets sold across the US in 2016 and 2017 were for limited quantities.
In other words, more than two-thirds of the tickets purchased that year were for a limited number.
In 2017, the number of counterfeit lottery tickets on the market was up 5.2 percent from 2016.
In the US, there are more than 60 million lottery tickets out there, and more than 90 percent of those tickets are counterfeit.
